Barbara Beretich House Revealed

In 2016, I blogged about this house in the 1000 block of Harvard Ave. Since then I found out that it belonged to Claremont artist Barbara Beretich who passed on in 2018.

The house’s new owners (CGU) have removed much of the growth. All of the artwork from the front of the house has been cleared away, revealing some lovely tile work and a fountain (currently dry).

A few months ago, before this clearing, I noticed shadows from the lattice work and snapped this shot. I’m glad I have it, as the trellis has also been removed. Note the stone with the house number and BB for Barbara Beretich. My friend and fellow blogger also noticed the change.

From Harvard Ave. to Green St.

A year ago I met a woman who told me that she lived on Green St. near Oakmont Elementary School in a house that had been moved from Harvard Ave. I squirreled that information away in my brain, and the other day I was walking in that neighborhood. I decided to see if I could figure out which house was hers, and this one stood out as different than the rest in the neighborhood.

I wrote to the good folks at Claremont Heritage and found out some information about the house.

“Do not know original builder. House originally located at 709 Harvard. Ella Sugg had it moved to Green St. when she built the house currently located on Harvard.

1931 city directory lists Charles and Marvel Fielder living here. Mr. Fielder had a grocery store in Claremont.”

Here is a photo taken of the east side of the house in the Claremont Heritage report.

Here is a photo of the west side of the house today.

The current house at 709 Harvard is now the house for the President of CGU.

Claremont Heritage Virtual Home Tour: Harvard Steps

Because of the pandemic, many organizations have put events online, including the annual Home Tour in Claremont. We enjoyed last year’s tour and were looking forward to this year’s. This past weekend viewers had the chance to watch a video tour of Small Homes and Accessory Dwelling Units. You can look at the brochure online here.

The most photogenic home on the tour (from the outside) is the apartment building called Harvard Steps, just south of Wolfe’s on Harvard. The history and description start on page 24 of the brochure.

September 2018 Photo Round-Up

The colleges started up after Labor Day this year. The town is back in full swing.

This exhibition at the Claremont Museum of Art closed and a new one has opened.

This house on Harvard had these boxes placed just so, looking like an obstacle course for dachshunds.

A year ago in June, this Vintage Flip sign went up on this house on the corner of 4th and Yale. Now it appears that renovation is starting.

Now, if fall weather would arrive, we could appropriately welcome in October.
